Choosing the Right Mineral Mix

Not every feed-store block helps deer.

Salt-heavy cattle blocks (often cheap red blocks) may be 95%+ sodium chloride. Deer lick them eagerly. They do little for antler mass.

Read the guaranteed analysis. A better deer-oriented mix typically targets roughly:

  • 15–20% calcium
  • 8–10% phosphorus
  • Enough salt (~30–40% in many blends) to drive consumption of bitter minerals

Avoid mystery “secret recipes” with no analysis. If the bag will not list Ca and P clearly, skip it.

Granular mixes for stump licks generally outperform solid blocks because rain can leach minerals into soil and rotting wood, creating a long-term site.

How to Build a Durable Stump Lick

A lasting site beats a powder pile that washes away in one storm.

  1. Pick shade and heavy soil. Clay holds minerals better than sand. Edge of bedding cover or near water works if legal and low-pressure.
  2. Use a decaying hardwood stump (oak, hickory). Avoid pine/cedar if you want deer to chew the wood later.
  3. Create a shallow bowl on top of the stump and expose major roots.
  4. Apply 20–30 pounds of granular mix onto stump, roots, and adjacent soil.
  5. Revisit lightly in spring/early summer to refresh—not weekly stomps that educate every buck on the farm.

Rain drives minerals into wood and clay. Even after visible powder disappears, deer often paw craters and chew treated wood for seasons.

Dig a shallow depression in the soil around the stump if clay is present. Minerals leach downward and outward, creating a soil lick that persists for years. Some managers refresh with 10–15 pounds every six weeks from April through July rather than one massive dump.


Site Placement and Herd Use Patterns

Placement decides whether you help the herd or create a circus.

Good placement traits:

  • Shaded, moist soil
  • Near natural travel but not in the middle of your best November funnel
  • Multiple small sites beat one mega-pile that stacks deer nose-to-nose
  • Away from property lines if neighbors object or regulations restrict attractants

Poor placement:

  • Open food-plot centers you plan to hunt all fall
  • Public-land pinch points (often illegal and always high theft/disease risk)
  • Single site serving an entire high-density herd in a CWD zone

Space sites 200–400 yards apart on large properties so subordinate bucks are not bullied off a single stump. On 80-acre farms, two sites often suffice. Language matters because lawmakers define it tightly.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) spreads partly through saliva and shared sites. Concentrating deer over one stump raises risk. Progressive states (examples historically include portions of Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, and others) have enacted broad bans—rules change, so verify annually.

Ignorance is not a defense. A July mineral block in a banned county can still mean fines, gear seizure, and lost privileges. Check your state wildlife agency by county, not just statewide headlines.

  • “Hit it every night in November” (often baiting behavior / legal risk)
  • One giant crater with 30 deer stacked (disease concern)

If legal pressure or CWD rules tighten, convert effort to hinge-cutting, native cover, and food plots that disperse animals rather than stack them.

Antler changes take seasons to evaluate. Compare age-class averages over three years, not one summer camera hit. Minerals support herd health; they do not replace letting bucks reach maturity.
